Hackley Hanging

One of my ideas for this year (yeah lets see how long I keep this going, lol) is to re-envigorate some of my older fancharacters and OC concepts, hopefully giving people as much enjoyment out of them as I have making them. Some of them i have drawn before but I wanted to upgrade them, revitalise them, give them more depth.

So here is a personal favourite of mine, Hackley (AKA Helena), a rayian hacker extrodinaire.

Don't you hate it when you get settled into a job and find a vital piece of equipment is juuuuuuuust outta reach XD SO ANNOYING. Poor Hackley was looking all cool doing her Matrix 'hanging there fixing tech stuff' thing...

Hackley lives with her twin brother Modem (Maurice) and cousin Rex (...yeah that's not a nickname, he's really called Rex), and all three are technical wizzes.

Because of a birth defect Rex was born with weak limb-connections and given metal 'arms' to give him use of his hands. Bespite making him strong and dexterous Rex was bullied by other kids for being 'weird looking' and 'part robot'. Upon seeing how sad and lonely their cousin was, Helena and Maurice agreed to get technological enhancements too from the same doctor who worked on Rex. Maurice has special optic cyborg implants to improve his vision and reading speed (making him a superb code reader and puzzle solver), Helena got special data cables implanted directly into her brain hidden amongst her dreadlocks, meaning she can process digital data mentally at the speed of a military computer. She can also download data into a data chip in her brain and store it for future downloads.

Hackley is a typical geek chick, unaware and unconcerned by normal girly things, enjoying the thrill of technology and it's constant advances. While she is a hacker by career she works mainly finding holes in the data networks of companies who hire her and her brother as security. She can be quite cheeky and flirty with guys she likes, and once you get to know her she has a suitably dorky sence of humor, but isn't interested in maintaining friendships outside those she makes online

She loves thick drinks like smoothies and milkshakes and is rarely seen without one in hand. Her hobby is collecting, maintaining and designing viruses which she stores on various dummy-computers and discs, and she loves having code-breaking races with her brother. She and Maurice are FEIRCELY competative. Despite this Hackly is very defencive of her sibling and cousin and will stand up for them in any situation.

Her biggest fear is severe claustrophobia...and yet when packed in by the computers and technical goodies that litter their home she isn't bothered at all. :D

The first thing that springs to mind is, "This feels like it's straight out of a movie." It's very dynamic, with a lot of tension.

The background is kept simple, but gritty and in keeping with the overall mood. I think adding to the background would detract from the picture as well. The shadowy-ness is appropriate and well-done, but I am curious about the light distribution around the spanner - there doesn't appear to be any shadow cast down from it on the "floor?" I am not sure whether or not this is deliberate, but it's not a big deal. The hanging wires draw the viewer's attention vertically down to the central figure, and the fact they match Hackley's dreadlocks is a stylish touch. The colour scheme as a whole, in fact, is really nice: soft, earthy khakis and browns with dashes of vibrant red that really bring the scene to life.

I really like the character idea - tomboyish nerd girl-types are relatable but interesting characters with a lot of scope for exciting plotlines. It would be good to see more of Hackley.
