Asking Permission stamp by raygirl Asking Permission stamp by raygirl
In my last journal I moaned about people on DA using original or fanart they didn't make to build 'custom' yu-gi-oh cards, and then slapping them up on DA without bothering to ask the original artist, give credit, or even acknowledge that the work on the card isn't theirs. And people do this ALL the time....not just with yu-gi-oh cards, but with ALL SORTS of things. Wallpapers, page IDs, t-shirt prints, collages, inspiration posters, memes, mods for video games, icons, stamps and just plain reposting of 'found' artwork.

DA's stance on this is pretty clear:

FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?
FAQ #257: What sort of permission do I need to use someone else's work?

See? Right there. Unless you have permission from the original creators to manipulate, reuse or repost their work you shouldn't be posting it.

Naturally there are exceptions like dollmakers and bases and memes and photographs of desktops and stock images and art where the creator has said it's ok to re-use their work....but so often I'll be browsing DA and see examples of this...in so many different fandoms and subcultures...it's sickening

But if that isn't bad enough, sometimes I'll come across someone who used an original piece of work in a deviation, and i point out the problem to them and link them to the original creator. And what do they do? Instead of removing the offending image and seeking permission before uploading it again, they just slap a credit notice on the image comments with a link to the original or say 'I DIDN'T DRAW THIS AND I ADMIT IT SO IT'S OK'

....

no

no, it is NOT ok

JUST GIVING CREDIT DOESN'T MAKE IT OK:

FAQ #306: Does "Crediting" let me use whatever I want?

If you CAN track down the original creator then you really should and get their permission. If you CAN'T then you probably shouldn't be using that particular piece of fanartwork.

DON'T BE LAZY, DON'T BE SELFISH, DON'T BE RUDE.

By reposting fanartwork without consent you come across as someone who has no respect for the original creator, that all you care about is your own artwork and showing off and getting comments. Is that honestly the reputation you want to have as an up and coming artist?

And who knows? If you don't ask you don't receive. I've had a few people ask my permission to use my art in stamps or wallpapers; I don't think I've ever said no. I'm always flattered and surprised when people ask so nicely to use my work for their projects. It shows they cared enough to come and ask first, they respected me and in return I RESPECT THEM.

Chances are the original artist will be flattered...a lot happier than they would be if they just happened to find THEIR work uncredited in YOUR gallery.

This lazyness has to stop. We should be teaching people that just taking stuff and begging forgiveness later is wrong, and that asking first is right. We should be building that mutual respect as a team of artists, regardless of age, skill or technique, and aiding other by being open and honest and understanding.

.....ok my rant is done XD

I am so utterly sick of people who say they can use whatever they want because they gave credit (perfect example is this idiot: comments.deviantart.com/1/1642…). No. Just fucking no. But it happens ALL THE TIME.... Long story short: totally faved this stamp.

The thing is i work hard on the original stuff i come up with, to a point gifts are ok but at the same time i still think you should ask first. What if the person doesn't want you to make them a gift?, you don't work hard on your characters just for a person to say oh hey i like that let me use it. Sides no one can do the character justice, like the person who made it in the first place.

You know what's even better? Posting "I didn't make this, it was made by the artists".
I keep seeing that especially on Youtube.... "Images belong to their owners". That is NOT GIVING CREDIT. -.-
I sometimes repost DA-stuff to my Tumblr, but even if its fanart made for my characters I always ask first:p

I always make sure someone asks before using my art then make them give credit. Like I have something in my gallery and asked her if I could color it and post she said yes so I was sure to credit her with all the art but the coloring was mine. If I ever find my art used with out permission I tell them to take it down since they didn't ask first. if they say, "but I gave you credit!' I would say, "Dosn't matter, you used with out permission its like art theif now please remove or be reported." great stamp btw.

Oh sure, a one word 'ok' is more than enough, but so many people don't even try and get that. They just assume it's ok, which is wrong

I'm totally using this stamp because I manifest the same thing. Only because you can give credits to someone, it doesn't mean you have permission. At least when I'm doing stuff that belong to other people, I always ask for permission. And crediting is something I always do!
