In my last journal I moaned about people on DA using original or fanart they didn't make to build 'custom' yu-gi-oh cards, and then slapping them up on DA without bothering to ask the original artist, give credit, or even acknowledge that the work on the card isn't theirs. And people do this ALL the time....not just with yu-gi-oh cards, but with ALL SORTS of things. Wallpapers, page IDs, t-shirt prints, collages, inspiration posters, memes, mods for video games, icons, stamps and just plain reposting of 'found' artwork.

DA's stance on this is pretty clear:

FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?
FAQ #257: What sort of permission do I need to use someone else's work?

See? Right there. Unless you have permission from the original creators to manipulate, reuse or repost their work you shouldn't be posting it.

Naturally there are exceptions like dollmakers and bases and memes and photographs of desktops and stock images and art where the creator has said it's ok to re-use their work....but so often I'll be browsing DA and see examples of this...in so many different fandoms and subcultures...it's sickening

But if that isn't bad enough, sometimes I'll come across someone who used an original piece of work in a deviation, and i point out the problem to them and link them to the original creator. And what do they do? Instead of removing the offending image and seeking permission before uploading it again, they just slap a credit notice on the image comments with a link to the original or say 'I DIDN'T DRAW THIS AND I ADMIT IT SO IT'S OK'

....

no

no, it is NOT ok

JUST GIVING CREDIT DOESN'T MAKE IT OK:

FAQ #306: Does "Crediting" let me use whatever I want?

If you CAN track down the original creator then you really should and get their permission. If you CAN'T then you probably shouldn't be using that particular piece of fanartwork.

DON'T BE LAZY, DON'T BE SELFISH, DON'T BE RUDE.

By reposting fanartwork without consent you come across as someone who has no respect for the original creator, that all you care about is your own artwork and showing off and getting comments. Is that honestly the reputation you want to have as an up and coming artist?

And who knows? If you don't ask you don't receive. I've had a few people ask my permission to use my art in stamps or wallpapers; I don't think I've ever said no. I'm always flattered and surprised when people ask so nicely to use my work for their projects. It shows they cared enough to come and ask first, they respected me and in return I RESPECT THEM.

Chances are the original artist will be flattered...a lot happier than they would be if they just happened to find THEIR work uncredited in YOUR gallery.

This lazyness has to stop. We should be teaching people that just taking stuff and begging forgiveness later is wrong, and that asking first is right. We should be building that mutual respect as a team of artists, regardless of age, skill or technique, and aiding other by being open and honest and understanding.

.....ok my rant is done XD

Oh sure, a one word 'ok' is more than enough, but so many people don't even try and get that. They just assume it's ok, which is wrong
